DHUMC Book Talk: Session I Summary and Reflections

A short summary of what we discussed this evening:
-Missionary work and its role in the acceptance of racist beliefs about black people;

-the misrepresentation of Christianity for means of acquiring power and privilege;

-theories about the origins of racist beliefs—specifically “curse theory” and how these ideas took hold and became foundations for slavery;

-internalized racism —how people of color even today grapple with the legacy of race theories;

-the influence of China/Communism on American power structures and how communist countries like China and Russia use our history of racism as a tool to divide and conquer us and possibly replace the US as the dominant/most influential country in world affairs.

For those who attended tonight, please provide feedback on the discussion.
Consider the following:

-What worked well for discussion?

-What needs refinement?

-Topics you would like to revisit at the next gathering.

Thanks again and have a pleasant evening!
