DHUMC Book Talk Reminder: Stamped Session I

Good evening all!
This is just a reminder that this Friday, January 29th, is our DHUMC Book Club! We are meeting at 7:00 PM on Zoom.
Let's try to have the Introduction and Section I (chapters 1-4) of Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You ready for discussion. You are welcome to read ahead but let's try to keep discussion on Friday to what has been assigned. We don't want to spoil the next chapters for those who have not read ahead! If however you think going section by section is too slow -- we can consider adding more next time. We'll discuss our process more on Friday.
So here are some questions to think about as you read:

1. Why do you think the authors continue to say "this is not a history book"?

2. What do you think about how the authors conceptualize segregationists, assimilationists, and antiracists? Did their way of framing these three types of thinking and behavior about race alter your initial perceptions? Why or why not?

3. Do you think all perspectives carry equal weight? Why or why not?

4. The authors identify what they feel is the origin of racist ideas. What are your thoughts about this?

5. What is your belief about how Christianity was used to justify enslavement of human beings?

6. The authors discuss how racist ideas were used to separate people who under normal circumstances would have banded together (pages 25-27). Are there examples of this in the modern world? Discuss.

Looking forward to seeing you on Friday.
